Roget: Fuel Price Increase To Affect All

President General of the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union, Ancel Roget, is claiming that to increase the cost of fuel is an attack on the population.

At a Press Conference on Monday, Mr. Roget said the impending increase of the various types of gasoline at the pump will not just affect the motoring public. He said there will be negative effects on the cost of living.

During debate on the Finance Bill 2021 in the lower house on July 2nd, the Minister of Finance Colm Imbert said Government was looking to put the framework in place for a new fuel distribution system that will affect gas prices at the pump - but he said the eventual retail costs would not to be much different from what prevails now.

Mr. Roget said citizens are unable to publicly reject the government's decision at this time.

In the 2020 budget presentation, the Finance Minister announced the decision to liberalise the fuel market and remove all subsidies by January 2021, leaving prices at the pump subjected to market forces.

In June, Minister Imbert said the government must reduce the country's long-standing dependence on billion-dollar subsidies not only on fuel but other commodities like water and electricity in order to close the gap between expenditure and revenue, and balance the national budget.
