Since my mom died 12 years ago, I build a hearth on the beach each time I come to the cabin. I take the limestones and construct a freeform fire pit that will serve multiple purposes. Here I will burn the accumulation of fallen Cedar branches from the understory. There also has been some cooking, one time a delicious steak with my beloved Laila. The biggest focus is doing ritual, ceremonial, and magical workings.
I wait for calm nights when the wind is barely whispering so that the fire risk is low. Stewarding these loving and loved Cedars is a top priority when I’m here, and I do my best to safeguard them from fire. I also never build a fire that will be large, I keep it on the wee side, which is more than enough. My brother almost burned down the whole forest at my mother’s wake! I do not want to be THAT guy!
The building of the hearth is an act of devotion, it is Sacred work. I often say prayers and mantras as I slowly create the space. It’s hard on my body, and through the years, I've learned to slow it down and not rush. Each Winter, the last hearth is taken and reshaped by the ice and waters. I never know what will greet me when I return.
Experiment #214:
At the site of the previous year’s hearth, look to see what’s happened. How did the ice, snow, Lake claim the beach?
Depending on the water level, decide on a new location. I like to be close to the water’s edge for safety reasons.
Decide to record a still photo after placing each rock. (This was exhausting, and the battery gave out before I finished.)
Lay down the flat foundation stones. I create a circle because it pleases me.
Take all the time needed, don’t rush.
For Godd’s sake, drink some water!
Recite mantras and prayers as you select and place the rocks.
Build up the sides with smaller stones.
After I finish for the day, I take a swim, I need it!
As night falls, build a small fire for the Full Moon.
Give thanks to Life and the Sacredness of Being Alive.
What an honor to build this hearth on a Full Moon! The Sacred fires will serve as a focal point for my stay here. I look forward to many more evenings like this.
Happy Full Moon, Wondrous Beings!
