This is a Motormouth couple car review of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class AMG G63. The Mercedes G-Wagon or G-Wagen has been around since 1979 and started as a military vehicle and morphed into the ultimate luxury SUV. What an impressive SUV with a 4L twin-turbo V8, a 9-speed automatic transmission, 577 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. It goes 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. The G-Class 550 has a 4L twin-turbo V8 with 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. It goes 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. The G Wagen has a timeless, tall and square design with classic LED round headlights and LED daytime running lights encircle them. There are dozens of gloss and matte paints to choose from, plenty of 19” - 22” wheel designs and a range of styling options. What a gorgeous colour for our test model, Deep Green (non-metallic) for $4,500 CAD. The AMG 63 comes standard with 21” wheels; our test model has 22” AMG Cross-spoke wheels for $2,650 CAD. The AMG design bumpers feature chrome trim elements that are sculpted to flow into the wider AMG fender flares. The side strips on the body are in black with the AMG logo ahead of each front door. After four decades of adventures and conquering all different kinds of terrain, the G Wagen is even more exceptional than ever. Along with its 4-wheel drive and three lockable differentials, its off road capability from climbing to fording depth is impressive. The G Wagen has an independent double-wishbone front suspension, which gives this SUV better stability on the road because the tires touch the road more. It allows each wheel to act and react independently from the others. It improves handling, offers a smoother driving experience especially on bumpy roads; it really is terrific. Not only is this SUV quick on the street, but also capable on the trail, best of both worlds. Although many will never be able to afford this 6 figure SUV, I think we can all appreciate its iconic look and stunning interior design. The beautiful saddle brown/black Nappa leather upholstery is a real standout in the cabin including, a leather dash and leather covered grab handles. The only things carried over from the old G-Class to the new one are door locks, a spare wheel cover and headlamp washers. With those locks, you don’t get key-less entry, you grab the door handle, click the button and the door releases. When you close the door, the sound is unique, almost like a vault closing. The drive-dynamic multi-contour and climate front seats are so comfortable, they are available in the seat comfort package for $3,700 CAD on this AMG model. The G-Class comes with standard and available technologies including, dual 12.3” displays, steering wheel touch controls and voice control for the navigation. With 64 LED ambient lighting colours to choose from, you can change the cabin lighting to suit your mood. The sunroof has heat-rejecting glass and while this is the roomiest G-Wagen yet, its maneuverability has improved both off-road and around the city. Unfortunately, this model does not come with the MBUX system, but instead the older COMAND system.
