Some of you may be a part of our Fit After 50 program, and some of you should take a look at it if you haven’t yet. There are amazing exercises in that program, and I want to show you how to warm up to build more muscle with those exercises. There are different kinds of warm ups, but it depends on what your workout is going to be like. The first phase of exercises in the program is circuit style, in Phase 2 we do muscle groups in order.
When warming up muscle groups for your workout, it is good to do 6 reps of light weight for each exercise you are going to be doing. These warm ups should not be intense, warm up sets should be easy. The goal is to just warm up your muscles, so you don’t injure yourself in your workouts. Not only is this warming up your muscles, but it is also getting your heart rate up and your blood flowing. It is good to warm up each exercise a couple times to have that blood flowing. This is a great way to warm up for a circuit-style workout.
When doing a normal workout with sets of each exercise, there is a better way to workout. I recommend you warm up before the exercise you're doing. So, instead of doing all the warm up exercises in a row, you are doing them before each exercise. Use the weight that you are planning on using, but do half the reps for the warm up. If you go hard in your workouts without warming up, you are going to potentially injure yourself and put unneeded stress on your joints.
When warming up, you can also lower the weight in addition to reducing the reps. It does take a little bit of time in your workouts to warm up, but it is best to make sure you don’t injure yourself in your workouts, especially after the age of 40. Remember, warm up sets do not count towards your actual working sets.
I encourage you to try warming before your next workout, or during your next workout depending on the kind of workout you are doing.
