At the end of every kata in iaido/battodo there is a movement called “血振り chiburi,” which we are taught to remove blood off our blades after cutting the opponent.
But does chiburi actually work? Let’s find out…
Yes, chiburi is actually not enough to remove all the blood off the blade. If you really wanted to take all the blood off, you would have to use a hand towel to wipe it off.
Then what is chiburi for?
I believe the theory that it’s for “checking if the 目釘 mekugi is ok or not.” The blade and handle are connected by only one pin (to make it easier to remove the blade from the handle), which means if it breaks, the katana will fall apart.
After cutting an enemy, your top priority is to check if the 目釘 mekugi is ok by shaking the blade, to know if you can still use it for another battle that might happen immediately.
