Liberal Senator Andrew Bragg says the cost of renewable energy is coming down “considerably but we need to be cautious”.
“That’s why I think when you look at the time scale here, we’ve got, you know, nine years until 2030; I think 40 per cent cut (of emissions) is a reasonable precision for us to take," Mr Bragg told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
Mr Bragg added Australia needs to spend money on back up energy for the cases when renewables fail, such as when there isn't enough sun for solar panels.
“You've got to spend a lot of money on transmission because there’s obviously going to be times when it’s not sunny in some places or not windy in others and so, you need to connect it all together.
“Also, the heavy-duty renewables like offshore wind generate a lot more energy and is much more reliable.”
