Sadie Suffers From Mysterious Labored Breathing & Fluid In Chest

Last October, eight-week-old Sadie and her brother Riley came to Benny’s Friends with eyelid agenesis. After these two fearful siblings settled into their foster home and gained some weight, they underwent surgery to alleviate the pain. Thankfully, the surgery was a success and everything was going great for these two cuties…until the other day when Sadie’s health took an absolute turn for the worse.

When Sadie and her brother, Riley, originally came to rescuers they were suffering from Eyelid Agenesis. This is a congenital disorder in which the eyelid doesn’t form properly during pregnancy. Because cats with Eyelid Agenesis don’t have an eyelid margin, the remaining fur around the eye rubs against the cornea, and since the eyes don’t close properly, dirt and dust can also get in and scratch the cornea, and depending on the severity, this can cause dryness, pain, infection and even blindness. So, once Sadie and Riley reached four months old, they had Cryosurgery to freeze the hair around their eyes.

Everything was going great for these two siblings as they played together in their foster home and awaited for the perfect family to call their own. However, out of the blue, their foster noticed that Sadie wasn’t feeling well and had labored breathing, so she was taken to the vet. After an evaluation, she was brought home to continue resting. However, a few hours later, Sadie was rushed to the emergency hospital because her symptoms were rapidly progressing.

The doctors immediately did an ultrasound and found fluid in Sadie’s chest cavity. After 6 hours of stay in an oxygen chamber, she was sedated to drain 100 CCs of fluid from her chest cavity, which has been sent out to be tested to determine a diagnosis. As for right now, Sadie is being treated with antibiotics in case it’s an infection, but we won’t know exactly what she has until the lab results come back this week.

Our hearts absolutely break for precious Sadie. This poor girl has been through so much for such a young kitty, and rescuers are determined to do everything they can for her. While none of the reasons for the fluid around the lungs are good, Sadie deserves a fighting chance. However, her medical bills are only piling up by the minute as her lab tests were $600, and her medical costs just for her visit to the vet and the emergency hospital are already over $1,500.

Anything and everything you are able to donate to this Sadie's care makes a difference in allowing rescuers to get her the care she desperately needs. Thank you so much for your kindness and we will keep you updated on sweet Sadie’s progress!
