Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kelly says Australia, the WHO and international health experts are all “very keen” to learn about the transmissibility and severity of the new Omicron variant.
“We do not have any evidence at the moment either in the laboratory, in clinical studies, or a population-wide basis that there is a problem with the vaccines, as far as we know, the vaccines work,” Professor Kelly told Sky News Australia.
Professor Kelly said Australia’s Department of Health is “watching very closely" and is "very actively engaged” with international partners, along with the science and medical community, to get the information through about Omicron.
He also urged residents who have yet to be vaccinated to get their first dose or second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine for protection and if due for a booster, to book for that.
