Why is everyone excited about Aston Martin?

Everyone in the F1 paddock seems to be interested in Aston Martin this year. Fernando Alonso claimed the team is ahead of Ferrari on race pace, and Mercedes say they expect to be behind them in the Bahrain Grand Prix. So, what's changed, and why is everyone so interested?
