Management Style is an approach adopted by the leaders or people in a management position for interaction with their subordinates.
Management Style refers to the technique adopted by managers in handling situations within an organization.
Factors that shape the Management Style
Internal
Internal refers to the factors within an organization like corporate culture, skills of the employees, and management framework.
External
External refers to the factors outside an organization like laws, competitors, suppliers, economy, etc.
Types of Management Styles
1. Autocratic Style
Autocratic Style follows a top-down approach where the flow of communication is from top to bottom, the management makes all the decisions and the employees cannot make suggestions as they are fully dependent on their superiors.
2. Paternalistic Style
In Paternalistic Style, the management looks after the best interest of its employees and asks for trust and loyalty in return. Although the decisions are unilateral the management explains them to the employees.
3. Democratic Style
In Democratic Style, communication is healthy and both ways and superiors welcome feedback from the subordinates but the ultimate decision-making authority lies with the management.
4. Participative Style
In the Participative Style, the employees, as well as managers, are actively involved in the decision-making process.
5. Collaborative Style
In Collaborative Style, management encourages extensive discussion of ideas and takes a decision based on majority rule. Employees are creative and engagement is high.
6. Laissez-Faire Style
Laissez-Faire Style is a more hands-on approach where the employees are trusted to work without supervision and can make their own decisions.
7. Pacesetting Style
In Pacesetting Style, the employees are required to follow the footsteps of their leaders to reach the high benchmarks.
8. Coaching Style
In Coaching Style, the employees are considered valuable members and the manager’s job is to guide and develop their team successfully to achieve organizational goals.
9. Visionary Style
In Visionary Style, the management explains the goals and gives the employees the freedom to achieve those goals with minimum interference.
