Quick Facts: The responsibility of the EU for arms sales to warring parties in Yemen

The armed conflict in Yemen since its inception has caused the death and injury of thousands of Yemeni civilians. As of November 2018, 6,872 civilians were killed and 10,768 injured, the majority due to Saudi-led coalition airstrikes, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The actual number of civilian casualties is likely to be much higher. Thousands more have been displaced by the fighting, and millions suffer from a lack of food and medical care.
European weapons are fueling the conflict in Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition is battling Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement, as arms sales from EU member states to Saudi Arabia undermined European arms control efforts.
"In Yemen, European weapons are mainly responsible for the ongoing war," said German member of the European Parliament Sabina Loesing, who is leading efforts to hold European governments to account.
