Afghanistan: Mazar-i-Sharif residents rally to support army as Taliban approaches

Residents rallied outside the Shrine of Hazrat Ali in Mazar-i-Sharif, Balakh Province, in support of the Afghan security forces on Sunday as the Taliban militants approached the city.

The demonstrators were seen chanting slogans against the group and waving Afghan flags before soldiers joined the rally.

Balkh province officials reported clashes between the security forces and Taliban fighters on the outskirts of Mazar-i-Sharif after militants advanced several kilometres. However, they were not able to enter the city yet.

SOT, Mansoor Mohibi, Protester (Dari):"The districts that fell to the Taliban forces some days ago made huge concerns for the people of Mazar-i-Sharif, but having our security forces, I am confident that those districts will be captured back by God willing. The city of Mazar-i-Sharif is safe too. I demand from our government to support more our great soldiers so they could fight against the enemies of homeland."

SOT, Basir Mosawi, Afghan security official (Dari): "Until I am alive, until I have energy and power, until I have the ability we will stand against them. We will fight again and again, as you see the personnel, thanks God today more such personnel are already on the frontlines. And they are defending the frontline bravely. They don't let the enemies to make even one step inside the city of Mazar-i-Sharif."

SOT, Dawood Tarakil, Balkh Police chief (Dari): "A number them reached the Marmol district. A number of them were in Khol district and some of them were in the Dedadi district. They were beaten and pushed back. They suspended their operations. It is not like that they stopped operations, but they faced security forces advances and they were beaten."
