New evidence reported by The New York Times reveals that Donald Trump did, in fact, attempt to stage his own coup, by using the Department of Justice to declare that the election was "fraudulent" and promised that he and his Republican allies in Congress would do the rest. There is no other way to describe this than a failed coup attempt, but luckily his allies at the DOJ refused to go along with his corrupt plan. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains what happened.

Just say the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me, that is how Richard Donoghue, who was at the time, one of the deputies to acting attorney general, Jeffrey Rosen, described a December 27th phone call that he and Rosen had with then president Donald Trump, just say the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me and of course, as Donoghue pointed out, Trump's congressional allies. Now this story broke late last week and what it tells us is that, yes, Donald Trump himself was apparently attempting some kind of coup. As Chris Hayes pointed out, it was a failed coup, but a coup nonetheless. Donald Trump attempted on multiple occasions to get the US Department of Justice to come out there, say the election was corrupt, that the results cannot be trusted and then he would somehow handle the rest. So the big question that everybody has, actually multiple questions, obviously, first and foremost, who are the congressional allies? Who were the people who were going to work with Donald Trump to do whatever the hell it is he was trying to do?

And that's the second question and that's the big one. What exactly was he planning on doing? Leave the rest to me implies that he had a plan on how to either get this election overturned or somehow stay in office beyond January 20th. Either way he was abusing his power as the president of the United States at the time to try to force the Department of Justice to essentially throw out the 2020 presidential election. I don't know what more we need to prove that this man absolutely was willing to do whatever it takes to stay in power. And at this point it's almost a foregone conclusion that because of the events of January 6th, whatever little coup he was planning got derailed. Who knows, because we do know by the way that the phone calls to the DOJ that were happening on a near daily basis actually stopped after the January 6th insurrection. Trump stopped calling the DOJ asking them to overturn the election after that day, maybe it was because of the insurrection.

Maybe it was because at that point, the electoral college votes had been certified, but whatever it was, something happened that day that made him stop. And we need to know what it is and we need to know what he was planning to do. And we need to know what allies he was talking to in Congress that he thought was going to help him along the way here. I know we already have a big select committee working on the January 6th insurrection investigation, but now it's time for another one already. We have to have answers from this. This is not something that we can just sweep under the rug. This is not an oh my God story that we can forget about in two days. This is important. This matters. This threatens the very office of the presidency itself, the legitimacy of that office, the legitimacy of the federal government itself. We need answers and Donald Trump himself is the one that needs to be called to give those answers. This is what Congress needs to be working on right now.

This bombshell story that came out late last week.
