// Building ENGAGEMENT:
How to engage with a child at home!
#1) Observe! Watch your child! Write down things that you child is interested in!
Add simple LANGUAGE using SINGLE (functional) words! Ex: "Go, Up, Down, (any type of action - eat, drink, jump) nouns HELP" etc and any onomatopoeias!
#2) Follow your child's lead! Imitate THEM! Do what they are doing with the toy / object! Invent NEW things to do with the objects or just pass it back and forth!
**Do NOT try to control the toy / goal / outcome of the play routine. Simply INTERACT! Do NOT withhold items from your child to try to elicit any type of "skill" during engagement. HOLD items to share between you and your child/client, but do not WITHOLD.
#3) Look at your child's body position / posture. Do they have their back to you? JOIN them in their space on the floor. facing each other at eye level.
#4) Try a social game - Ring Around the Rosie, Freeze Dance, Row your Boat with your child in a laundry bin, air plane baby, peek a boo, sneeze something off of your head
#5) Observe the child, Join the child in their interest, imitate them without manipulating their routine / line or play, and simply ADD new information!
Blow bubbles in water with a straw, blow bubbles with a wand, make funny faces in a mirror, stick out your tongue and see if your child imitates, give pretend kisses or blow on a babies belly, simply give your child an object and see if they will give it back to you, and vice versa, sing songs! If you're happy and you know it clap your hands, wheels on the bus!
Add SENSORY INPUT - running, jumping, tag, hide and seek, deep pressure, light hard work, a sensory ball, play dough, etc!
