Romance Scam is an emerging scam that has spread throughout China and even overseas Chinese circles in the last two years, causing serious harm. It originated in Southeast Asia and is also known as the "Southeast Asian pig-butchering scam". The fraudsters are mostly Chinese people from Fujian province, who hide in Myanmar and the Philippines, and they cheat through online dating and making friends. Their target is mainly people in mainland China, but now they also expanded to overseas Chinese.
The name "pig butcher" was given by the scammers themselves, who call their victims "pigs", call the online dating tools (various social networking software, or dating sites) "pig troughs", call the chat scripts they use to swindle their victims "pig feed", and call the money scams "butchering pigs". In the end, the victim suffers financial losses and is humiliated as a pig, which is both mentally and financially damaging.
