Hair Consultation Tips

Hair Consultation Tips

Tips for consulting with your hairstylist:

-It's super important to have a proper consultation prior to starting services. As a client you should be comfortable asking your stylist all the questions you have about your hair goals and the services that will be done.

-Do your research on the stylist you're going to consult with. Make sure that they specialize in what your hair goals are. Look through their work and see if it's similar to what you want. Also, pay attention to their price range. Make sure it's something you're comfortable with.

-Be completely honest and transparent about all the things you've done to your hair, both at home & in the salon, for the last 3-4 years, as it can affect your hair services.

-Hair only grows about 6 inches a year, so whatever you've done in the last year or two will still be in your hair.

-Share with your stylist how often you style your hair, chemical treatments you’ve done, previous color services, styling products you use, and even special medications you take, like those that would affect your hair or skin.

-Inspo pics or videos are always best to show and give an idea of what your hair goals are, but be realistic and understanding that you might not walk out of the salon looking exactly like your inspo pics.

-Make sure to look for examples of colors with the same starting base color as yours, as well as similar hair texture.

-Pick hairstyles that match your lifestyle. Keep in mind that most pics are styled with curls, or blow outs, and nobody wakes up like that. So if you want your hair to look like the photos, we can give you the color, or cut, but you need to do your part & style it & maintain it at home.

-Bad haircut trauma is a thing. Be sure to emphasis exactly what you want and don't want when describing your desired haircut to your stylist.

-Explain exactly what you like (& don't like) about hair color inspo pics. Tell your stylist how light or dark you want to be, what tonal range you like, and how much color you'd like to see.

-Before starting the service, ask your stylist to go over the pricing in detail so that everyone is on the same page about everything. If any changes need to be made, now is that time to say so.

-Consultations can be as quick as 10 minutes or less, to up to 30 minutes or longer. But regardless of how long it could take, it's best to say everything you need to say so that everyone understands what's going on & is comfortable enough to move forward with the service.
