How Has the COVID Pandemic Changed the World of Maiko/Geisha?
https://youtu.be/LB3SHW0WqrU
*The content is based on personal studies and experience
There is no intention of denying other theories and cultural aspects
Maiko are girls younger than 20 years old, who are in their training period to become a Geisha/Geiko which are professional entertainers.
These are the 3 points to distinguish between Maiko and Geisha/Geiko!
1. Hairstyle
2. Kimono and Obi
3. Shoes
Maiko use their own hair to tie up the special hairstyle and put on many ornaments, but Geisha/Geiko wear a wig and hardly have any ornaments.
Next, Maiko wear special kimono called 振袖 Furisode with very long sleeves and an obi that is so long (about 5~7m) it can almost reach the floor.
Also, the inside of their collar has a red color that represents youth or an unmarried woman. Geiko wear regular kimono with a typical obi knot that anyone is allowed to wear.
Lastly, Maiko wear special shoes called おこぼ okobo/ぽっくり pokkuri (called differently depending on the region), which are 10cm-tall heavy wooden geta with small bells in them. Geiko wear regular “草履 zori” that anyone would wear.
All of the special fashion that the Maiko have are meant to enhance their young beauty, or to help them train how to walk and move around properly by wearing heavy kimono and shoes on purpose.
