Old Testament: Codifying the Law (Biblical History)

The first codification took place on Mount Sinai, when people received the Decalogue on the tablets along with the oral directions from the Lord through Moses.
The second one happened in 622 BC during the reign of the king Josiah. The king himself, while reading the Books of the Law “tore his robes” as a sign of repentance, and the entire people “pledged themselves to the covenant,” that is, they solemnly promised to observe what had been commanded.
The third and the final codification goes back to the middle of 5th century BC, when priest Ezra brought the Pentateuch from Babylon and read it to the assembly of the people in Jerusalem. Pledging to observe the Law of Moses, people fasted and repented of their sins.
