The 2021 Toyota Hilux is one of the few pickup trucks still available to buy new in the UK today. Why? Well, there was a time, not so long ago, when a change in certain tax rules made ownership of pickup trucks a disproportionally affordable option in the UK, and that saw these big hulking machines break free of the confines of the building site, and find their way on to family driveways everywhere. These days, however, emissions regulations are seeing more and more pickup models being withdrawn from sale, and as a result there are now only a handful left to choose from.
So with no Mitsubishi L200, VW Amarok and Mercedes X-Class to compete with, and the Ford Ranger and Nissan Navara departing very soon, it's only the Isuzu D-Max and Ssangyong Musso that can stand in the Toyota Hilux's way. Does the big Toyota have what it takes to clean up?
